Penderecki selected the best work
The First Krzysztof Penderecki International Composers’ Competition “Arboretum” ended on Saturday in Radom. It was won by Warsaw composer Bartosz Kowalski-Banasewicz, writes Anna S. Dębowska (Gazeta Wyborcza, 12 November 2012).
His work – “Prismatic Shapes" for string orchestra – appealed to the taste of Krzysztof Penderecki, who himself judged the compositions that reached the finals. In this unique formula, patterned on the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award in Tokyo, there is only one judge (an eminent composer), who makes an arbitrary decision after a public performance of the most interesting works.

A new Penderecki
Bruckner, Brahms, Mahler, Schönberg - all of these composers have had their work premiered at the Musikverein, and the Society of Music Lovers in Vienna continues to set the tone where contemporary music is concerned. To mark its 200th anniversary, works have been commissioned from a number of leading composers, among these Krzysztof Penderecki.
