Premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Trumpet Concerto

Performances by internationally renowned artists, including the New York-based Shanghai Quartet, as well as the Polish premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra – the 3rd International Krzysztof Penderecki Festival – Level 320 Zabrze begins on 23 October!
Following tradition, the inauguration of the event will be held at the Guido Coal Mine, in K8 chamber located 320 metres underground. A kind of happening, the concert will be an interactive premiere performance with audience participation, combining the abstract art of painterly actionism and body painting with contemporary dance. All of this in harmony with the brilliant music of Krzysztof Penderecki and Antonín Dvořák, in a masterful interpretation by the New York-based Shanghai Quartet, the French clarinet virtuoso Michel Lethiec and the famous Art Color Ballet. Critically acclaimed in the classical music world, the Shanghai Quartet will additionally emphasize their oriental roots by performing arrangements of Chinese folk melodies, which are featured on the ensemble’s latest best-selling album. One of the inspirations and a leitmotif of the music and artistic performance will be an exhibition of professor Penderecki’s colourful manuscripts, which, in addition to the composer’s music, are his distinctive mark thanks to their uniqueness. The concert will take place on 23 October.
The following day, a unique instrument will be heard in the atmospheric Pump Hall (also underground). The viola organista, reconstructed by Sławomir Zubrzycki based on a design by Leonardo da Vinci, is a string keyboard instrument which the author intended to replace an entire orchestra. The audience will also see Leonardo’s sketches and a film showing the reconstruction of this extraordinary instrument. We are in for the true “Da Vinci Code”!
The Polish premiere of the Festival patron’s Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra will be performed during the final concert (25 October, House of Music and Dance in Zabrze). The piece was written for the internationally renowned Hungarian trumpet virtuoso Gábor Boldoczki. That evening Sinfonietta Cracovia – one of the partners commissioning the piece, will accompany the soloist under the baton of Jurek Dybał.
The Festival programme is also comprised of many accompanying events, including those for a younger audience. On that occasion, a mural promoting this unique feast of music in Silesia will be produced amidst the sounds of Krzysztof Penderecki’s music.
