Honorary Doctorate from the University of Zielona Góra

On 13 May 2014 at 11:00 am, Prof. Krzysztof Penderecki will be conferred the Honorary Doctorate from the University of Zielona Góra at the University’s Assembly Hall on 50 Podgórna Street. The distinction will be awarded to Prof. Krzysztof Penderecki in recognition of his extensive creative achievements, the international significance of his works, and their prophetic message in defence of the absolute ethical and intellectual values as the reference points for the foundations of modern culture.
A day before, on 12 May the Maestro and his wife will meet the staff and students of the Faculties of Humanities and Arts (University Library, 5:30 pm) and attend an evening concert (Zielona Góra Philharmonic, 7:00 pm).
Still earlier (4:30 pm), the exhibition ”A Sea of Dreams did Breathe on Me… Krzysztof Penderecki – music scores and notations” will be opened at the Gallery of the University Library with the author’s participation. The exhibition presents 29 original scores of Krzysztof Penderecki, including The Devils of Loudun, Polish Requiem, Christmas Symphony, Te Deum, Credo, De natura sonoris, Seven Gates of Jerusalem, Violin Concerto, Per Slava, Capriccio, Kosmogonia, Symphony No. 5, Utrenja, Songs of Reverie and Nostalgia. The exhibition will be open until 16 June.
On the occasion of the University of Zielona Góra conferring the Honorary Doctorate to Prof. Krzysztof Penderecki, there will be a showing of a documentary about the artist, “Paths through the Labyrinth” directed by Anna Schmidt (University Library, multimedia room 2.12, second floor, 12:00 pm).
Wife Elżbieta Penderecka and outstanding personalities of the music world, among them violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, conductor Valery Gergiev, Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, and others talk about the Maestro. The film attempts to present various human passions: music, botany, philosophy, family. It is a personal, intimate and amusing portrait, which offers a unique insight into the world of a man whose musical and social connections link the East with the West, tradition with modernity.
An exhibition of posters connected with the artist’s music works, “Krzysztof Penderecki’s Musical Passions” is shown on Campus A in the main building hall on Podgórna Street. The exhibition presents posters illustrating the extensive musical oeuvre of Krzysztof Penderecki, including his Paradise Lost, The Devils of Loudun, The Black Mask, Ubu Rex, St Luke Passion, Stabat Mater, etc. The posters were designed by well-known artists, including Roman Cieślewicz, Waldemar Świerzy, Franciszek Starowieyski, and Wiesław Wałkuski.
