Krzysztof Penderecki International Composer’s Competition

Works for Certamen Compositorum Internationale Arboretum, the Krzysztof Penderecki International Composer’s Competition, can be submitted until 8 July. The competition is organized by the Radom Chamber Orchestra. The names of finalists will be announced on 1 September. The competition is an opportunity especially for young, unknown composers.
In the first stage of the competition, six compositions will be selected by a jury of composers Paul Patterson and Piotr Moss as well as Maciej Żółtowski, director of the Radom Chamber Orchestra. In the second stage, the selected works will be performed in public by the Radom Chamber Orchestra. Krzysztof Penderecki will have the final word on the verdict and awarding of prizes. The final concert will take place on 10 November in the Krzysztof Penderecki Concert Hall at the Radom School of Music.
Works from composers in Japan, Australia and other countries were already submitted to the competition. The scores can be sent to the address of the Radom Chamber Orchestra, 53 Żeromskiego St., until 8 July. The prizes were funded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and the Mayor of Radom.
The name of the competition, Arboretum, refers to Prof. Penderecki’s passion. The well-known composer, who lives in a renovated manor house in Lusławice (Małopolskie province), established in his 5-hectare park an arboretum with almost 1800 species of trees and shrubs from all over the world.
Penderecki told PAP that garden planning and tree planting can be compared to planning a score. “You cannot plant trees wherever you want, neither can you put notes anywhere. This must be very well thought out,” he said.
