Avant-garde and Utrenja
The Polskie Nagrania label reissued two albums with Krzysztof Penderecki’s music under the baton of Andrzej Markowski, who first conducted these works. “The recordings exude unique energy and power – both artists understood one another very well to give fantastic performances despite the opposition of rank-and-file musicians,” writes Dorota Szwarcman (Polityka).
“The Avant-Garde album provides a brief review of the hits of the time, from the “Psalms of David” and “Strophen”, awarded at the memorable competition of the Polish Composers’ Union, to the “Threnody” and “Polymorphia”, recently performed in Wrocław, to the most radical “Anaklasis”, “Dimensions of Time and Silence” and “Fluorescences”. “Jutrznia/Utrenja” still surprises with the heat of emotions and splendid performance (perhaps the world has not seen such a bass as Bernard Ładysz since). Both albums are obligatory”, she emphasizes.
