“Portraits and Coins”
The “Portraits and Coins” exhibition opened on 12 August in Cracow near the Barbican, opposite the District Branch of the National Bank of Poland. The exhibition, prepared by the National Bank of Poland, is a collection of over 100 photographs showing well-known Poles together with occasional coins of the National Bank of Poland. These include a photograph of Krzysztof Penderecki.
The distinguished representatives of the world of culture and social life, actors, economists, athletes, Olympic medalists and travellers present the most beautiful occasional coins issued by the National Bank of Poland. The theme of each coin is associated with the professional achievements or private lives of the persons presented in the photographs. The exhibition shows, among others, the portrait of Jerzy Buzek, who presents the coin “Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union”; Lech Wałęsa with the coin “Polish August 1980”; Tadeusz Mazowiecki with the coin “The Election of 4 June 1989”; Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz with the golden coin “The Beatification of John Paul II - 1 May 2011”; Małgorzata Niemen presenting a coin dedicated to Czesław Niemen; and Jerzy Owsiak with the coin “Ten Years of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity”.
The exhibition is put on display in 16 Polish cities; in Cracow it can be attended until 4 September. The photographs with the coins and autographs of the persons shown on the portraits will be put up for auction at the 20th Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity next year.
